Bronchodilator Effect of a New Beta-Adrenoreceptor Stimulant, Procaterol (OPC-2009)

Abstract
The short-term effects of oral administration of Procaterol (0.05mg, 0.10 mg) and metaproterenol sulfate (20mg) on ventilatory functions were compared over a period of two hours in sixteen patients with stable, reversible obstructive airway disease.
Test results were evaluated by measuring forced vital capacity, 1-sec forced expiratory volume and maximal mid-expiratory flow at 30 minutes prior to and 1,2 hour after oral drug administration.
Both Procaterol (0.05mg, 0.10 mg) and metaproterenol administration induced significant increase in all the parameters of expiratory flow. Procaterol 0.10 mg administration showed best increment and metaproterenol showed least increment in ventilatory functions, but the differences among them were not significant statistically (p>0.05).
There was no associated side effect of all the drug administration with respect to subjective complaints.
